Subject: Text search without index "better" than with FTI??
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Notes Client
Technical Area: Functionality
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.3
Reproducible: Always
Earlier I received a call from a customer telling me: "The search in your application does not work". The application uses standard Lotus Notes FT search so I started to investigate and found the following:
In the application there is a field called "Titel". In some of the documents this field contains the word "Teamleiter".
Now I access one view and "search this view" for "leiter", which is of course only a part of the word.
-> No result
Word variants -> no result
Fuzzy search -> no result
With both options enabled I add a wildcard "*leiter" -> No result
I use the field search with and without wildcard: "field titel contains leiter" -> No result
Now I delete the Full Text Index and enter the query "leiter" -> et voilá: several hits including those with "Teamleiter". Obviously the on-the-fly-index does something different. Why is that? And what exactly?
Afterwards I tested in other applications as well. And found it reproducible that the full text index cannot handle parts of words not at the beginning. ("Team" works, "leiter" does not)
Has this always worked this way and I just did not realize it all these years?
Or has something changed "recently" in Lotus Notes & Domino?
Is there some setting I missed?
If that were working as expected I'd have to queue up with other voices saying that Notes search "does not work".
The customer is using Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Basic on Domino 8.5.2 FPx. I tested with Lotus Notes 9 on Domino 9 and locally.
Any thought appreciated. Thank you!
Manuel
